Shirley’s sporting cv includes periods as a dancer and springboard & highboard diver before turning to athletics. She was . GB under 24 Masters Diving Champion in 2000 she has passed professional exams in tap and modern dance. She also earned a distinction at Grade 8 in ballet to become a member of the Royal Academy.
Turning to Hammer throwing, she took to it immediately making her Scottish senior debut at the Commonwealth Games in 2002
